The Curiosity rover currently exploring Mars has an interesting image manipulation capability on board that is effectively a form of data compression, albeit a very unconventional one.
Since early in the days of digital cameras, photographers have realized that there are ways to combine multiple digital images of the same scene to provide a better composite image. One of the first uses of this technique was to increase the camera's effective depth-of-field with a technique called focus stacking or focus bracketing. The idea is simple enough: you take several images of precisely the same scene, but each with different focus settings. Then you combine the parts of each image that are in focus, so that the entire resulting image is in focus.
Focus stacking is particularly useful in macro (close-up) photography, because the lenses used have very shallow depth of field. Digital photographers routinely use focus stacking today, generally with software such as Photoshop. You might start with images taken at 4 or 5 focus settings, then combine them carefully to get one image as a result. This is especially useful with studio or product photography, where your subject is stationary.
From the perspective of data size, this is a very inefficient process. To get a single final image, you have to move several full size images from the camera to your focus stacking software. For an earthbound digital photographer, that's a few seconds of time as the memory card gets read. For Curiosity, millions of miles away on Mars, it's an entirely different story – it has to send all those images over a very slow communications link.
Now Curiosity has a macro camera (the MAHLI imager), and it has a major depth-of-field challenge. It's designed to capture images of rocks for geologists to study, and those rocks generally have surfaces that are far from flat. But sending multiple images for focus stacking over that slow data link is a more bandwidth than they'd like to use. The solution: implement focus stacking right on the Curiosity rover, so that only the final, all-in-focus image has to be transmitted. The MAHLI team calls this technique “focus-merge”
How do they accomplish this feat, normally done with human manipulation?
First, the MAHLI team built an in-focus sensing capability into the camera that extends across the entire image. On every image, the camera knows which pixels are in focus and which are not. This is similar to (but more extensive than) the multiple-areas autofocus capability of most high-end digital SLRs today. This in-focus data is stored with each image taken.
Then for any given rock that MAHLI is imaging, they'll take several photos (2 to 8, depending on the rock's depth variation) at different focus settings. Software on board Curiosity then scans all the images pixel-by-pixel, choosing the image with the best focus for each pixel. It also creates a visualization map showing the image selected at each pixel (using 2 to 8 gray levels, with blacker being more distant).
To anyone who has done much macro photography (as I have, with wildflowers), the result approximates magic: extreme close-up photos with essentially infinite depth-of-field. I really can't use this technique with wildflowers, because the darned things are highly unlikely to be still at microscopic scales. But I can envy the result nonetheless.

An Annular Eclipse of the Sun...
Down on the surface of Mars, the Curiosity rover looked up to see a beautiful annular eclipse of the sun by the Martian moon Phobos. You can easily see that Phobos is not spherical – it's shaped more like a potato than a ball...

Curiosity: Occultation...
Curiosity recently took a sequence of images of the Martian moon Phobos occulting its sister moon Deimos. Phobos is physically larger than Deimos, and is in a lower orbit, so its apparent size from the surface of Mars is much larger. The good folks at JPL took this sequence of images and made a movie out of them:

Curiosity is Back Online!
Hip hip hooray!
Curiosity has been offline for several weeks, after a software glitch (and possibly a memory failure; reports vary). The photo at right was returned amongst the first new batch since the glitch first occurred. It's very nice to see that! In just over a week, Curiosity (and all of Mars) will be on the opposite side of the Sun from Earth, so for a few weeks after that it will be “radio silence” for all the robotic explorers orbiting and sitting on the surface of Mars. Let's hope they all wake back up successfully when Mars is out of occlusion!

Mt. Sharp, in Considerable Detail...
Mt. Sharp rises from the floor of Gale Crater on Mars, which is where Curiosity is busy exploring. NASA just released a panorama of Mt. Sharp, composed of many photos taken months ago. It shows the huge mountain in quite sharp detail. The version below (and the full resolution version here) are the color-corrected version, processed to look as though the scene were viewed on earth...

Curiosity: Life-Friendly Environment on Mars...
Curiosity has finished analyzing the rock powder its drill produced a few weeks ago. The results show that ancient Mars had all the right attributes to sustain life. They're not claiming (not yet, anyway) proof that life actually did exist there; just that it could have...

Opportunity: Nine Years on Mars...
Yesterday was the ninth anniversary of Opportunity's landing on Mars. The plucky little rover was designed to last just 90 days, but it did a little better than that – and it's not done yet. How Quickly We Forget...
It's been nine years ago this week:
Opportunity, NASA's other Mars rover, has tooled around the red planet for so long it's easy to forget it's still alive.Designed for three months of operation, but here we are 108 months later and Opportunity is still going strong, and still returning good science. An astronaut wouldn't have lasted quite so long :)
Some 5,000 miles (8,000 kilometers) away from the limelight surrounding Curiosity's every move, Opportunity this week quietly embarks on its tenth year of exploration—a sweet milestone since it was only tasked to work for three months.
"Opportunity is still going. Go figure," said mission deputy principal investigator Ray Arvidson of Washington University in St. Louis.

Martian Images...
Both in today's dump from Curiosity. The top one is in true color, a close-up taken with the MHLI camera (full resolution). The bottom one is a composite panorama of images taken by the Mast camera (full resolution), color-adjusted to show what the scene would look like were it on Earth.
Zooniverse...
I ran across the Zooniverse site completely by accident yesterday. It's a portal into a series of web sites designed to allow ordinary citizens to help out on large science projects. The general theme is to help sort through very large quantities of data that aren't amenable to computer analysis. People are very good at detecting patterns, and a number of these web sites seek to exploit that with large numbers of human pattern-detectors.
For example, Planet Four (that would be Mars) is one of the sites is looking for people to help classify some odd features on the enormous collection of high-resolution photos taken by satellites whizzing around Mars. There are so many of these photos that many of them have never been viewed by a human!

Something New on Mars...
Interesting image in today's raw image dump from Curiosity (on Mars). This one is from the MHLI camera, showing a close-up of the rocky surface. You can see the little “blueberries” frequently observed on the Martian surface, but there's also something new (to me, at least): the white bits that look almost like someone filled in some pits with silicone rubber caulking. Other images in the same series show even more of this. There's no explanation posted for this yet, so I have no idea what that white stuff actually is (I'm certain it's not really silicone rubber caulking :)
