Ouray

Well, it was a long, hard slog (driving), but we made it into Ouray, Colorado by about 4 pm. We left Cedar City at 4 am, so that made it a twelve hour day.

Scenic highlights: Escalante Grand Staircase, Dixie National Forest just west of Capitol Reef National Park, Capital Reef National Park, and the entire road between Naturita and Ridgeway, Colorado. Other highlights: breakfast in a small run-down cafe in Escalante, where we got eggs, a large and thick slab of ham, coffee, juice, toast (all excellent) for $4 each. Good service, too. And dinner in Ouray, at an Italian restaurant (forgot the name) on the south end of the town's main drag.

This two-day "push" was the part I was most worried about with my ancient and venerable father, but he held up just fine. He's tired, but eager to get up into the wildflowers tomorrow morning. And he ate like the proverbial horse at dinner, a sure sign that he's feeling ok.
