Had to take my dog to the vet for a very infected paw and pulling from undersides these godawful things stuck into his belly. And they get into our blankets and clothes. They're effing evil. I've tried mowing short. I've tried burning. I'm reluctant to use chemicals. Any time it rains, instant lawn of this stuff. I hate it. A few days later his skin got badly infected, pus oozing out, and required antibiotics. This is the worst weed out there. Fast grower, loves dry soil, and is the first to bloom out of all the weeds I have in my yard. I have no idea how it grows so fast with little water. I suspect from its rosette like leaves. Sucks any sign of water before any other plant can. However, I can't seem to find any relevant data to support such a claim and, in fact, there seems to be a lack of any actual first hand experiences where these seeds have "drilled" or become seriously embedded in either animal or human skin.

Furthermore, after learning in depth about the mechanism of how this plant "drills" into soil, then considering the consistency and texture of soil versus skin, it seems very unlikely that it could actually penetrate deeply into skin.

This is because it lacks any force or pressure in conjunction with the spin.

Spinning can allow the seed to "burrow" easily into a loose layer of topsoil (or into a crevice). When the dry seed becomes wet it begins to unroll, which pushes the seed to almost stand on its point. Then, as the uprighted seed dries, it spins, disturbing the "not so-solid on a granular scale" soil below it, allowing the seed to drop downward. There is no pressure or force applied or needed.

Skin is not easily "moved on a granular scale" like topsoil. In fact, skin is a barrier and it requires force to penetrate. Since there is no natural pressure or force, the seed cannot move any deeper into the skin.

Yes, the sharp point can penetrate skin, like a thorn, but like a thorn there must be a force behind the penetration (i.e. you grabbed it or stepped on it, etc.). But again, there is no force pushing the seed further into the resistant skin, so it would just spin (if it can even do that).

As for being tangled in my dog's fur, but the shape of the corkscrew, in itself, explains why it's so hard to remove from hair or fur. It's not that "the seed is trying to drill it's way in," but rather it's just entangled in a multitude of individual strands of hair or fur wrapped around the many coils. Also, being so tangled in fur would further impede the seed and it's lack of pressure or force to "dig" or "drill."

After considering that information and the lack of first hand accounts of any such occurance, I believe the claim of danger to be a myth.

Do you know of a first-hand account? A person who can say they've had this specific seed become deeply embedded in either their animal's skin or their skin (more than just stuck in from the force of being stepped on, etc.)? Even better, a vet who has treated such an embedded seed of this plant?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4371913454013675123.post-88249431206692549592023-04-24T21:21:34.737-07:002023-04-24T21:21:34.737-07:00Dan Trembula did not kill himself. I went to high school with the demographic and I witnessed the majority of them behaving this way. Infact, I have heard from the very mouths of schoolmates who are Chaldean that the general stereotype is accurate. The rich children in these families are often gifted expensive cars when they are old enough to drive. They park them in the Steele Canyon parkinglot on weekdays but come weekends they are drunk driving them through the streets. Check the records of the 94-east, so many rich teens from Steele causing drunk driving accidents back then. Dick later passed away from cancer as well. Don came over to my house in Irvine a time or two, because I had wanted to run one of his new CPUs. and had it running CPM. I don't remember much about it, and it was a month or two loan from Dick to play with.

I think it was a 256k unit. At the time, I was running IMSAI chassis and Northstar and doing my own thing with a Tarbell controller in the NS Horizon with a dual bios, and an MDS NS controller in the Imsai as well. Don knew of it, and I was happy to have the capability to easily move stuff onto the NS directly from floppies.

I had a lot of floppy hardware from my hobby, and had the reference system for a floppy controller subsystem we did for work (Microdata) for a system we were selling to Olivetti. I had bought an IBM 5100, and the floppies that came off that system were formatted with deleted sectors, and oddball feature that almost noone ever implemented.

Was a great thing to know Don, and I never heard the suicide story. I heard thru Frank about him passing away. I think Dick continued manufacturing for a while, but don't recall for how long.

I know that Don continued tinkering with his basic and other software, interesting I'd not seen or didn't recall your doing the original work. I would occasionally get updates from him, and his (and your works) basic was the best I had.Jim Sthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10374598219483523283noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4371913454013675123.post-79376361822570524832020-07-04T06:52:12.350-07:002020-07-04T06:52:12.350-07:00Hi, Mario! I had my dad, step mom and twin brother with me. There was quite a bit of brush that we had to push through, and higher up there were some steep rocks. We had planned to reach the summit originally, but my stepmom turned around, then my dad and brother did too.even though I was told not to go all the way up, I was the only one who had reached the summit, and climbed up the old lookout tower. For instance, the article calls out some Torx bolts for the cable covers, whereas my drone had Phillips-head bolts. There were four or five such differences.
