Eyjafjallajökull...

Eyjafjallajökull is the Icelandic volcano that erupted in 2010, disrupting air traffic and spewing immense amounts of ash, carbon dioxide, and sulphuric acid into the atmosphere.  The appearance of the eruption is magnificently captured in this photo – from APOD, of course.

A Little Too Close for Comfort...

Years ago, my friend Jim B. and I climbed up the side of an active vent (Pu'u O'o) of the Kilauea Volcano on the Big Island of Hawai'i.  It was a cinder cone about 800' high, with a bubbling lake of lava in the crater at its peak.  Standing on the edge of that cinder cone, looking down at the lake perhaps 300' below us was a very memorable – and crazy scary – experience.  I'm glad to have done it, but I don't think I'd do it again.

Tungurahua Erupts!

From APOD, this gorgeous photo of the Tungurahua volcano (in Ecuador).  As always, click to enlarge.  The photographer (Patrick Taschler, a pro) caught a perfect moment filled with glowing molten lava, volcanic ash, lenticular clouds – along with blue sky and sunshine.  Totally awesome!

Volcanic Smoke Ring...

Steve and Donna O'Meara captured this photo of a smoke ring shooting out of the Eyjafjallajokull Volcano on May 1, on Iceland.  Anthony Watts estimates its diameter at 1 to 2 kilometers (about a mile).  Awesome!
