New Fire Monitoring Tool...
Completely by accident I just discovered a marvelous new tool for monitoring wildfires on the web. It's the “WunderMap” from Wunderunderground, the weather information site I've preferred for years. I've even been using this map for a year or so, without realizing that it had a fire information layer! Here's a screenshot showing a current fire near Beaumont, California:
There's a lot of information on this map! First, the orange blob is the latest officially reported fire perimeter. This information is usually a day or two old, sometimes (especially on smaller fires) even more. Then there's the triangle icon – click on that and you'll get basic information about the fire, and sometimes links to more information. In the upper right you can see little fire symbols – these are “hits” from low-resolution fire-detecting satellites (using infrared scanners). That information is generally only a few hours old at most. This lets us infer that this fire is burning toward the northeast. Finally, there's topographic information and roads – letting you see what sort of country is being burned through.
All of this information was available previously, but not all in one place like this. Wonderful job, WunderMap!
To see this fire information yourself, got to the link above and then click on the layer control. Scroll down through the list of layers and you'll see the control for for fire information (off by default, which is why I never realized it was there!):
There's one more thing worth paying attention to – the little “settings” gear to the right of “Active Fires”:
Here you get to choose what information about active fires you want displayed. Note the satellite choice: the North American Satellites choice gives you higher resolution and more frequent coverage, but North America only. The MODIS choice gives you coverage of the entire globe, but with lower resolution and less frequent updates.

The smoke you see to the northeast of Jamul is from a prescribed burn near Pine Valley. You can see it on the HPWREN Los Pinos camera (below).

Fire Information – UPDATED...
It's time for my annual fire information page update.
Cameras are a primary source for ground truth when there's a local and active fire. We learned the hard way in 2007 that local news sources are, for the most part, completely useless for “tactical” needs – if you're trying to find out about current fire location, current road closures, current escape routes, etc., these sources are just too slow. Fortunately for us here in San Diego County, UCSD's HPWREN system has a network of cameras at over a dozen sites. The images from these cameras are updated every two minutes, and they've got date/time stamps right in them – so you can be certain that the information you're viewing is current. The main HPWREN camera site and a mirror site are both available. I recommend getting familiar with the cameras most relevant to your location (for example, for us it's the cameras on Lyons Peak), and familiar with tools like Google Earth that will help you identify the landmarks you see in the HPWREN images. During the 2007 fires, we found these cameras to be the single best tool available to us – we used them to plan our evacuation route, and we used them to track the fire's approach to our home (which, thankfully, it never reached).
There are other very useful web sites as well. Here are three that I found useful during the 2007 fires:

UPDATED: There's a small fire (at least for now) over near Sycuan Casino, last reported at 20 acres and good progress being made controlling it. In the course of researching this, I came across a new resource:
CAL FIRE twitter (who knew?)
Also, here's the CAL FIRE San Diego County fire information number (only active duing major incidents): 619/590-3160

Fire in Lawson Valley...
...and way too close to home! But there were several pieces of good news in this experience...
Our neighbors Jim and Michelle B. called me around 3:15 pm with the news that there was a fire directly across the valley from us. At right (click to enlarge) you can see the scene from our front yard. The mountain in the distance is Viejas Mountain; the fire is almost due north of us. The wind was blowing toward the northeast, away from us and up onto a small peak that's in Cleveland National Forest. The reddish color is from the retardant dropped just before I snapped this photo, by the tanker plan exiting stage left.
Forty-five minutes later, the fire appeared to be out, with just smoldering embers remaining. As I write this, the command plane is still circling but there's no other aerial activity. At the peak of the battle, there were at least two helicopters and two tanker planes fighting the fire, a ground crew on the scene, and a command plane circling overhead. It was a very impressive demonstration of our firefighting capability, and a far cry from what we saw four years ago. As you might imagine, we find this quite comforting. Loveland Reservoir has more water in it than it has had for years, and it's right over that ridge that sits in front of Viejas Mountain. The helicopters and planes were cycling back and forth between the reservoir and the fire quite quickly. Another comforting factor!
The black bordered area on the map below shows my best estimate of where the fire was located.

Explosion and Fire on the USS Stennis...
I don't know anything beyond this news report. The bare facts: 10 sailors on the USS Stennis (off the coast of San Diego) were injured when an F/A-18C fighter's engine exploded and burned on the flight deck. None of the injuries are life-threatening. Two of the sailors are in the hospital in San Diego.
When I was in the Navy, over thirty years ago, a fire at sea was my personal nightmare scenario. This could have been much, much worse – and when the full story comes out, I won't be a bit surprised to find that a combination of pure luck and skilled damage control is why it wasn't.
These sailors will be in my thoughts today. If any of my readers have any further news or details, please leave them in comments here...
