Oh, Jeez...

Such depressing news to wake up to.  Somehow I don't feel much like blogging this morning...

  1. Not sure you could have expected something different. I've considered it inevitable for the last few months. With a majority in congress, you can always buy enough votes.

    However, I think a strategic mistake was made. In particular when they did the accounting slight of hand to make numbers balance better over the 10 year period the CBO evaluates, they delayed the actual start of the entitlements for 4 years. This gives a pretty large time-frame in which to repeal the legislation. Plenty of time for the republicans if they are serious about it.

    This has to be done BEFORE the entitlement actually starts or you fundamentally change the culture to plan for and rely on this. That's why you can't do anything to social security, medicare etc. This has become a fundamental part of everyone's retirement planning. Ingrained in our culture.

    So we'll see what happens the next time the Republicans have the majority. My guess is that they will be business as usual and won't do anything. Though maybe some of the states will successfully challenge it themselves.
