Language distribution...

Language distribution...  Here's a simple graphic showing how many people speak each of the world's major languages.  There were definitely some big surprises here for me!  High resolution version here...

  1. More people speak English than Hindi?! More people speak Portuguese than Russian? Only 225M people in the US speak English? What the...!

  2. Portuguese vs. Russian: that's South America's distortion on Portuguese, I'm sure. Brazil's population alone is pretty darned big. The 225M US English speakers is "native speakers", which I take to mean first language/primary language. English vs. Hindi surprised me, too. French surprised me by how small it was, and then there's Telegu, which I'd never even heard of!
