Local Murder

On Friday night, about a mile from our house (as the crow flies), one man was murdered and another man was injured. The San Diego Union-Tribune’s story, by Michael Stetz:

The 23-year-old man shot to death in a bizarre attack Friday night has been identified as Charles Crow of Jamul.
A San Diego sheriff’s SWAT team was called in yesterday in the search for the shooter, who, while dressed in camouflage and carrying a rifle, opened fire at the SUV in which Crow was a passenger.
The Sheriff’s Department said the SWAT team had left the area late last night and that no arrest had been made.
Another passenger was wounded, but not seriously, in the shooting, which took place near Skyline Truck Trail and Wisecarver Truck Trail in Jamul.
At the time of the attack, Crow and two others were looking for a piece of property that was for sale, authorities said.
They passed a Ford pickup while driving. After turning around, they again came upon the truck.
This time, a man got out of the truck and went to the center of the highway. He raised a rifle and fired several shots, killing Crow.
According to the Sheriff’s Department, the suspect is a white man with gray hair and an unshaven face. He is about 5 feet 6 inches tall and weighs between 140 and 160 pounds. He was wearing a green camouflage jacket, pants and a floppy brimmed hat.
The truck is believed to be a white Ford F-250 pickup.
Authorities have no motive for the killing.

This is rather bizarre, wouldn’t you say? Every possible explanation I can think of is odd. It could be a completely random crazed shooter with a very weird modus operandi. Or, it could be that the surviving occupants of the vehicle are lying through their teeth, and there actually is some connection to the victim, there is an identifiable motive for the killing, and the murderer chased them down into the cul-de-sac that Wisecarver Road forms. Or it could be that the killer was actually after someone else, and shot Charles Crow by mistake. But all of these possibilities seem quite unlikely!
I sure hope the police can get a handle on this one sometime soon. It’s been over 24 hours now, and there have been no announcements of progress…

There have been alot of thefts lately and some folks up here were pretty upset, but declined to call police. (We all know what responce time is and how seriously they take us hicks) What is worse though, is how some folks up here, especially the old timers, think they can just shoot at people. It’s a terrible waste and shame. Wisecarver is a little piece of paradise. Maybe this will get them finally to put their weapons away, permanently.

I dont think some old timer is guilty of this. but time will tell, the more I think about it why would anyone look for a piece of property at 8:30 pm what are you really going to see? something is very fishy.

Charles Willaim Crow was like a little brother to me. We had been friends for over ten years. He is a hard worker (not a theif) and a loving Father to his 6month old son. The news reports are wrong, they wern’t out looking for property, they were just out offroading and were not on anyines property. There are alot of “Tweekers” robbing peoples houses in Jamul and thats horrible. If some one is on your property you have a right to detain them untill the police arrive or shoot if they harm or treaten you, but you don’t go gun someone down on the public road. This horrible and I don’t think the news shows how serious this is, Chuck was shot with a .223 Caliber, multiple rounds were fired. This isnt someone with a .22 Caliber shooting warning shots. For Chucks Family and all of our friends I urge anyone with any information on were abouts of his killer to help us, so we can mend our broken hearts.

While some of you “Amature PI’s” are busy trying to solve the case and incriminate the VICTIMS (all of whom none of your theories about being theives and what not apply) Let’s not forget that Chuck’s lifelong best friend/girlfriend and 6 month baby boy are at home baring the greatest burden and the DEEPEST grief. For the record, Chucky is anything BUT a theif, and not one of the victims provoked this senseless, tragic act of hatred. I am so disturbed, knowing that there are human beings out there without the slightest grain of compassion for others. All we can hope is that the DEMON who committed thIS horrendous act will lose his mind over the nightmare and reality of what he has done, AND ALL THE LIVES HE HAS TURNED UPSIDE DOWN. To whom it may concern, Chucky was NOT A THEIF, rather a beautiful human being, a hard worker who took care of his family, would give a stranger the shirt off his back, and he certainly didn’t deserve to die the way he did. NO ONE DOES.If interested, there will be details about donating to his son’s fund posted around Jamul in the near future.RIP CHUCKYLOVED STRONGLIVED LIFE TO THE FULLESTBeloved father, son, brother, friendNEVER FORGOTTENINNOCENT MAN DEAD AT 23. Forgive the curiosity of of the town which you live in. No one in Jamul likes what has happened. We live in dangerous times and people are quick to draw conclusions based on media reports. For this I offer my apologies. I just hope you can find peace knowing that your memories cant be taken from you.

What provoked the shooter to shoot into the vehicle? Who was with Chuck? What were they doing at the time of the murder and why did the others who were with Chuck not bother to note the license plate of the other vehicle or do anything to stop the murderer from getting away? It makes no sense at all!

They were fearing for there lives. Chuck was already gone when the engine gave out on Skyline and they jumped out into the bushes hiding from this mad man. Please if anyone has any info please come foward, we need to get this bastard. He is probally hiding somewhere in our community and its just a matter of time before he strikes again to get out of town. We can’t bring Chuckie back but we can get this asshole.

Like everyone else in Jamul I am hoping the rumors cease and the truth comes to light. And a quick capture occurs."According to the Sheriff’s Department, the suspect is a white man with gray hair and an unshaven face. He is about 5 feet 6 inches tall and weighs between 140 and 160 pounds.""According to investigators, Orlosky is 6 feet 1 inch tall and weighs about 195 pounds.”

I just tried looking Orlosky up under warrant arrest, and I got the record for the warrant, but no indication of arrest. As a previous commenter noted, Orlosky does not show up under the “in jail” link. However, I note that the last time the warrant report was updated was yesterday (according to the notice on the web site), and the “in jail” information may be similarly behind in time. In other words, I’m not at all certain that the fact that Orlosky doesn’t show up means that he’s not in jail — he could be in jail and the computer hasn’t been updated…

I just heard a story from a neighbor about a man owning a lot of property near the Orlowsky’s who was a first class wacko, and routinely roamed the mountain in camouflage. Has anyone else heard of this individual? I heard he sold his land but may have retained “visitation rights”. Also, I know the Orloskys. His wife and daughter are some of the kindnest most considerate people out here. They are victims too. Please remember that it is still wrong to hurt innocent people no matter how hurt you may be. When the media said the boys were out looking at property for sale at that hour, we all know that is BS. Now, off roading, on the other hand, that we can understand. This area is an off roaders paradise. The majority of Wisecarver Truck trail however, has been gated off by new owners of a portion of that land. Likely the boys, like anyone else, on horse, foot, or off road vehicle, ended up on Orlosky’s property. There’s simply no where else to go. You can no longer go right down to Lawson Valley, as in years past. Same thing is true on Wisecarver lane. The gating of the fireroad causes all kinds of people to get lost wandering around looking for passage thru.I’m not even sure these gates are legal since they block Lawson Valley residents from a viable escape route in case of fire and they are supposed to be public roads. Does not sound like they have Orlosky, although people keep saying one media source claims they do. It really would be nice if someone who actually knows something would speak up. Also, residents in this area know you can’t go up Lyons Peak anymore because you will get shot. And you can’t go to the East end of Lawson Valley, because you will get shot. Thats the mentality you face out here, and thats what is basicly wrong with Jamul.

It’s a shame that folks have decided to use guns to keep people off their property. I’ve heard you can’t go up Lyons Peak without out getting shot at and that you can’t get through the California Riding and Hiking Trail that starts at Skyline Valley and runs through the western end of Lawson Valley. I didn’t know about the eastern end of Lawson Valley…my husband and I like to go walking out there and I used to ride my horse out there a lot - bummer!I feel very bad for Orlosky’s wife - I live on Wisecarver and, rumor has it, she is a very nice person.

Whoa, everybody. I live in that eastern part of Lawson Valley (and have for eight years). I have never heard of anyone being shot at. My wife and I have walked every road and trail in the valley, many times, without any incident whatsoever from any property owner. Some of those gated roads and trails run right next to my house; dozens of walkers and riders are on those trails each and every day. I challenge the commenters who are asserting otherwise to cite any actual incident, instead of repeating rumors and innuendo. Personally, I think it’s all BS — eastern Lawson Valley remains a friendly, open place to walk and ride in. I can’t speak for Orlosky and his attitudes — but IF he’s guilty, and IF the provocation was trespass, and IF it was innocent trespass on the part of Charles Crow and his buddies, then having one evil perpetrator doesn’t mean that all his neighbors are cut from the same cloth. On the other hand, it would be just fine with me if all those naive, sharp-tongued, ill-informed city folk kept and nurtured their fears and STAYED THE HELL OUT OF MY WONDERFUL VALLEY!

Sympathetic to Orlosky??? No way, Jose! I’m not sympathetic in the slightest to whoever perpetrated this crime, and it looks likely (based solely on the skimpy news reports) that Orlosky did it. My posting a picture is predicated on my having a copyright-free picture, and I do not (the San Diego Union-Buffoon copyrights all their photos). If I had one, I’d use it. This guy allegedly committed a murder less than a mile from my house — trust me, if I knew how to help haul him in, I’d be the first to do so! We’ll let the justice system sort things out. If someone is protecting him, I don’t know who it is…and I certainly don’t approve if that’s happening. But are you saying this for any reason other than a “feeling"? That doesn’t seem like a very firm basis for an accusation…However, having said all that, as a resident of Lawson Valley, in the allegedly “lawless” eastern zone, I take umbrage at some of comments here, including yours. Lawless? Do you have any idea what you’re talking about? Take a look at the PUBLIC crime statistics — you’ll find that “lawless” valley is one of the safest places in all of San Diego County. Sheriffs reluctant to respond? Au contraire — on the two occasions that I’ve called a sheriff, they were here in a most zippy fashion, very impressive. And they were eager to help. We have several law enforcement families living in the eastern part of Lawson Valley. Where is all this crazy talk coming from? I LIVE here, and I’m calling BS on these comments…

You would think someone like orlosky would make this list, but he is not there instead there are burgulars, people wanted for child molestation, check forgers and attempted murders and some for murder, I think the sheriffs dept should start outsourcing some of its computer work because they cant seem to get the job done. ppprobably because they drop the ball on the first 48 hrs. personally I would much rather recieve reponse in an emergency from the hwy patrol.

There was no room left in the mprtuary for Chucky’s funeral. Thant’s how well-loved he was. For those of you still speculating on what they did to “provoke” this, as far as his closest family and friends know, (or according to what we know of him and our friends who were with him) Nothing. There are many unanswered questions, and they lingered heavy on top of our grief at the service yesterday. It’s harder to bury somebody, without knowing WHY you are having to say goodbye in the first place. As the minister said yesterday, “Hate only hurts the hater”. It is so true in this case. Maybe the suspect, “BoB” or whatever, didn’t do it, maybe he did. Who knows? My question is: Where is he?? It’s be a lot easier todefend yourself (AND YOUR FAMILY) if you were around to show you are not in fact the one. Like I said at the very beginning of the blog, let’s please remember that Chucky’s gone, and the two with him, loved him more than anything, and are doing all they can to help find his killer. Pleasse don’t condemn them, rather say a prayer, especially for them. The driver did a miraculous job, getting his shambled, no tires, no headlights, windows, barely an engine jeep off of Wiescarver which is likely what saved THEIR lives. I couldn’t imagine having to go through 3 friend’s deaths. Only time will tell with this case. The energy and prayers will probably help, so please, I ask as a LIFE_LONG resident of Jamul: Bare together-not against. SOMEBODY committed this horrible act. If police give us any info, perpetuate it, get the word out, do anything you can! I know that Jamulians are capable. Do you see what one incident has done to the entire communtity?? It’s not right. We have set up a fund at Washington Mutual for Rose and baby Evan if anyone cares to donate. Thank you. I urge ANYONE w/ info to PLEASE come forward. We can’t begin to heal until their are answers.

For example, it was been reported that “At the time of the attack, Crow and two others were looking for a piece of property that was for sale", (at 8:30 pm in the dark) come on how many 23 year olds can afford property in Jamul? The other story is that they were “Off Roading”, everyone who lives in the country knows that you don’t go on other people’s property unless you have their permission.

Who knows what really happened that night? For all we know, the guy who shot Chuck was scared of them and reacted to a perceived threat when he shot at the vehicle. I mean, think about it. Some loud, drunk, rowdy kids in a SUV trespass onto your property and you go out to tell them to get the hell out of there and you see that there are several guys in the vehicle and you’re by yourself, you might over-react out of fear. I’m sure Chuck and his friends were probably belligerant and obnoxious when told they needed to leave. Likely, the guy started shooting when they attempted to get out to give him an ass-kicking for daring to tell them they couldn’t be on the road.

Folks, a little logic is certainly in order (rather, desperate need) here. There is NO evidence that the young men got out of their vehicle (which was ventilated about as badly as Bonnie and Clyde’s). They had no weapons, and there is no preliminary evidence that they were in the act of stealing [although, that - in itself - is absolutely no justification - even in a backward state like Texas - for shooting at a vehicle and/or its occupants (much less, an errant and folly TEN or more times)]. It is only speculative to predict that this shooter is a backward, Bungalow Bill ('I don’t dial 911, I dial 3-5-7') type, but I would be shocked if he wasn’t every bit the worst of the (Montana Militia?) 'mountain man' stereotype with an elevator that hasn’t reached the top floors in a long time. If you are the least bit protective of this precious freedom that we have, you don’t even chamber a round in your weapon until your life is being gravely threatened. And, you keep going - away from trouble (unlike Orlosky, who turned around, and was apparently waiting to ambush them on their way back out of that 'dead' end). It sounds like this numbskull (who is now out on bail, heaven help us) carried artillery in his vehicle wherever he went, and was vigilant about being at-the-ready to confront anyone who (he perceived in his pea brain to have) crossed his path. It could have happened to any one of us (who - unwittingly - might easily make a wrong turn in the maze of meadering roads and trails that cut through the (out)back country. When I lived in Descanso, I had numerous people drive up my 1/4 mile long driveway by mistake (probably thinking it was a dirt road). Nobody ever had to run with their lives (or be witness to menacing gestures, much less an armed response). This MURDER could not possibly be the act of a (least bit) civilized person. Furthermore, it occurred at 8:30 or so in the evening, not 3:30 in the wee hours of the morning! My heartfelt sympathies go out to all of his victims, because there is no shortage of them (including his likely meek, and abused, wife) in this senseless act of outrageous violence. And please excuse my editorializing, in the extremely unlikely event it turns out to be unfounded…
