Egyptian Blogger Arrested

Yesterday I sent the email below to the Egyptian Embassy (embassy@egyptembdc.org). I have not received any response.

The single best source I’ve found for news on Alaa and the other arrested bloggers is Sandmonkey (whose blog is an excellent source of Middle Eastern news and perspective in general).

Please join me in boycotting Egyptian goods — we don’t need our government’s help to impose trade sanctions!

Arrest and detention of Alaa

Dear sirs:

My already low opinion of Egypt’s government has reached a new low with its recent despicable actions in arresting and detaining Alaa (along with several other bloggers). Whatever false face you place on it, your behavior is transparently the simple, thuggish suppression of free speech.

I condemn you.

I am unilaterally imposing trade sanctions on Egypt until and if Alaa and other bloggers are released: I will not purchase any goods containing any component that was manufactured or grown in Egypt. I have sent emails to all of my local, state, and federal governments urging them to do the same. I am publishing this email on my blog to ask my readers to join in this effort. And I am calling on all my fellow bloggers to do the same.

Sincerely,

Tom Dilatush
