Well, I think you're a bit disappointed because you are a software engineer. I am a physicist and have been writing code in different environments for almost 30 years. To scientists, a program is a tool not a product, and a lot of scientists write code like this.

That's what makes the "ARTIFICAL CORRECTION" comments in briffa_sep98e.pro so significant, IMO. The author was careful to make sure s/he wouldn't forget the code was patched by highlighting the "corrections". The output of this program would not look like the source data, so the comments remind the author "Why this is so."
